MEKONG BLUE

Picture
MEKONG BLUE
Mekong Blue represents one of the finest silk products in Cambodia, where women in the Stung Treng Women’s Development Center (SWDC) produce silk products that are unique and of a high quality. Mekong Blue silk products are made of 100% natural silk fibers with natural non-toxic German dye, and are 100% handcrafted.

The Story

PictureA weaver at Mekong Blue
SWDC was established in 2001 through a private donation by Mr. David Trevor Wright, with the initial purpose of caring for former soldiers, policemen and sex workers infected with HIV and terminally ill with one or more of the diseases associated with AIDS. Recognizing the need to increase awareness of preventing AIDS and to help local communities break the cycle of poverty, SWDC transitioned into an NGO that offers programs in literacy and health education, as well as training and employment opportunities. The Mekong Blue brand was thus created.

Using indigenous Cambodian Golden Silk, Mekong Blue products showcase the detail and intricacies of traditional Cambodian silk and weaving styles. SWDC is expanding its Mekong Blue operations, and as of 2011, the organisation employs 70 women who work on 38 looms and 3 sewing machines to produce beautiful Mekong Blue products. Mekong Blue also encourages buyers to create their own designs, which helps to enhance the creative skills and confidence of the women weavers employed by them.

The Impact

Based in the Northeastern province of Stung Treng, SWDC has made a positive impact in the community there. The women at SWDC are UNESCO award-winning weavers who have won the Seal of Excellence for their scarves in both 2004 and 2005. In addition, SWDC is a member of the Artisan Association of Cambodia, a local Cambodian group that helps with the socio-economic integration of vulnerable groups through the production of handicrafts and showcasing quality Cambodian silk.
